New Carolina backup quarterback David Carr said Monday night he was excited to be joining the Panthers and considers it a good opportunity.
“It’s an opportunity for me to get on a winning team and improve as a quarterback,” he told the Houston Chronicle’s John McClain at the Houston airport.
Although he was a starter for his five seasons with Houston, Carr also said he had no problem with backing up Jake Delhomme.
“I’m going to do everything I can to get Jake ready to play,” he said. “If my number’s called, I’m going to go out and give the Panthers my best.”
Carr was signed last week by Carolina to a two-year deal that averages about $3 million annually.
David Carr was in a bad situation with Houston, where he spent most of his time picking his carcass off the turf. In Carolina his situation increases positively and he should thrive in his new environment and spot on the team.
As Delhomme’s backup, Carr will only start if (a) the the former goes down with an injury or (b) the fans call for a Delhomme benching. This probably would have happened last season, though, as fans remember, the only replacement was Chris Weinke. Carolina simply would not have been able to justify benching Delhomme and sending in Weinke.
But in 2007, that changes. Delhomme’s job is no longer as secure as it once was, and quarterback controversy will begin brewing in Carolina if he plays with the same inconsistencies as last season.
