Knee rebab will keep Culpepper out of minicamp

Full story at Sun-Sentinel:

Dolphins quarterback Daunte Culpepper said he won’t fully participate in the team’s first 2007 minicamp next weekend as his 17-month rehabilitation from a major knee injury continues.

Culpepper, though, remains optimistic about regaining the form that made him one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks in 2004 even though his future with the Dolphins remains in question as the team considers other options at the position.

“When I’m healthy it won’t matter,” Culpepper said after a recent workout. “Without a doubt, [I'm still the man]. I definitely want to be the [Dolphins'] quarterback and that’s what I’m working hard to be. Like I said, when I’m healthy, it’s no issue.”

Culpepper received most of his hype because of his time spent in Minnesota with Randy Moss. He was in the perfect situation for a strong-armed quarterback. His reliance on Moss to catch any deep lob made him a candidate for MVP in 2004, the season Peyton Manning won by setting a record for touchdown passes.

But after leaving Minnesota, Culpepper spent last season in Miami being sacked. That’s no joke; he was sacked 21 times in four games, leading the league in sacks before an injury sidelined him the rest of the season.

Returning to Miami in 2007 will not necessarily guarantee him a starting spot. The Dolphins have been very active in their search for another quarterback, talking with David Carr (before he signed with Carolina) and Trent Green. And the team has been rumored to be eyeing draft prospect and Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn. Should he fall to the Dolphins (9th), expect the team to snatch him up.
