Continuing their search to find a veteran quarterback to compete for the backup job to starter Michael Vick, the Atlanta Falcons met with former Detroit Lions and Miami Dolphins quarterback Joey Harrington Friday, according to his agent, Joby Branion.
Harrington is the second quarterback to visit with the Falcons this week. Jay Fiedler, a former starter with the Dolphins, was the other. Atlanta has spoken with the agents for quarterbacks Anthony Wright and Tim Rattay over the past few weeks, but there have been no developments.
Contract talks had not been broached with Harrington, according to Branion. Harrington also did not have to go through a workout, Branion said.
After the Falcons traded quarterback Matt Schaub to the Houston Texans, it was understood that Atlanta was putting all its faith in the sometimes electrifying, sometimes head-scratching quarterback Michael Vick.
Vick has been dubbed the league’s most overrated quarterback, mostly because he usually sees between 3-5 very good passing performances during any given season. Not enough to make fans happy. His only redeeming quality is his running ability, and his only excuse has been a lack of wide receivers who can catch the ball.
That changes this season. With newly acquired (and excited) wide receiver Joe Horn on board, the team has a receiver who has veteran leadership and wisdom and hands.
And the pursuit of Joey Harrington indicates that Atlanta doesn’t have total faith in Vick. While Harrington is certainly not worthy of the starting spot, he is a capable replacement and true pocket passer.
2007 is perhaps Vick’s last chance as a quarterback in Atlanta. Start the countdown.
