The Browns are apparently ready to step up their pursuit of Chiefs quarterback Trent Green.

Browns General Manager Phil Savage told WTAM AM/1100 on Thursday morning that the next step is to negotiate a “ballpark contract” for Green that would prompt him to want to come to Cleveland for a visit.

Green’s agent, Jim Steiner, declined to comment Thursday night on possible negotiations - but also didn’t deny that they’ve begun.

Trent Green’s only real expected suitor, until now, has been Miami. His frequent visits and talks with the team created the expectation that he would end up with the Dolphins. The only thing that actually held up the trade was Green’s contract. The 36 year old veteran is due $7.2, $7.7 and $9.2 million over the next three seasons; Miami is currently $10M under its salary cap while Cleveland began the off-season $26M under and can afford the contract Green demands.

This is not to say that Green will not take a pay cut; he probably will. His age and injury concerns make he somewhat of a liability, though his consistencies while in Kansas City, despite inadequate receivers, make him a great option for the Browns.

Earlier today it was reported that Brady Quinn visited Cleveland. Obviously these two stories are directly connected, and this report that Green may end up in Cleveland makes it that much more likely the Browns opt to draft (already projected) running back Adrian Peterson.
